SALIENT
Cover design“There is nothing in science that isn’t worth being excited about.” Bill Bryson

2009 was declared the “Year of Science” in order to engage young people in the topic, and improve public understanding about how it works and why it matters. Salient, Victoria University’s weekly student magazine, required an eye-catching cover for its science themed issue.

The word ‘awesome’ hints at the spectacle and wonder of science, and at the same time engages youthful minds.
It was morphed into a mathematical formula, and large three-dimensional custom letterforms were built. A party ensued, complete with bright hats, streamers, cake and dry ice.

Designed in collaboration with Robert Wallace.

NINE LIVESResearch project and
book designAs part of a self-initiated project to investigate how the older generations are affected by the huge changes in the way we communicate, I sat down with nine people who could give me a first-hand account of the societal and cultural developments throughout their lifetimes. They shared their stories with me and answered eight questions.

A limited run of fifteen books was published and distributed to the contributors and their families. One daughter wrote, "I have found out more about my own dad than I have ever known – especially about the war as he never would talk about it."

CHAMPION
Self-initiated book designAs a Christmas present for my mother, I designed a book filled with photographs, drawings, letters and song lyrics.
My mother is a 'quiet' hero, so to communicate this the typography and materials used were understated and simple. To me and my siblings she is a champion, and this is shown with a single gold foil.

BIRD OR BEAST?
Letterpress posterNew Zealand has several traditional foods that are significant to its culture, society and history. This print celebrates Colonial Goose, a roast lamb meal invented by early European settlers. While investigating the use of nostalgia in design, the aim was to visually represent the meal in a modern context.

The traditional handprinted method gives a sense of nostalgia, while the bold composition creates a modern flavour. Thick brown stock and heavily layered ink communicate the nature of a hearty meal, and the creams, browns and reds are reminiscent of meat and gravy on plates.

BY GEORGE! ADORNMENTS
Identity developmentGeorgia Hughes creates hand made jewellery from new, recycled and found beads. Her pieces are sophisticated, yet each has its own personality. In order to promote her products she required a brand identity that made her stand out amongst the predominantly floral aesthetics of the competition.

Inspiration was drawn from the eccentric modernism and symmetry of Art Deco architecture and design. The movement had no intention but to be purely decorative, which mirrors the purpose of the jewellery. The stamped logo and greyscale printing allows the visual style to be applied across a range of media at minimal cost.

BODEGA
Research project and
book designThere are few records of Wellington’s original Bar Bodega, a somewhat grungey icon of New Zealand music history. By adapting archaeological methods to a design methodology, historical fragments were pieced together to build a visual representation. A number of people with differing connections to the bar were interviewed, and their experiences recorded. For visual documentation, old promotional posters and other ephemera were donated, including a collection of unseen photographs.

Many thanks to Horst Puschmann for kindly providing images of the bar.

This project received an award in the New Zealand Best Design Awards.

LA CIGALE
Brand extension and
product designLa Cigale is a little piece of France in the middle of Auckland, New Zealand. It is place to go for an eclectic mix of authentic French antiques, homewares, clothing, food and wine.

The growing popularity of the business, particularly the French Market, presented an opportunity to further expand the brand. The mark was updated, and a range of products was produced that captured the eclectic nature of La Cigale. The tea towels feature a cicada wing motif, and the French fable 'La cigale et la fourmi' – 'The cricket and the ant'.

Designed with the team at Everything.
